Cicada of Japan

The noise in Japan during summer time is earsplitting. There is this constant high-pitched buzz of thousands of cicadas. They sit on the trees and sing all day long. This speciman I found in the National Museum of Nature and Science of Tokyo. It has a beautiful black and white pattern on its head and back. by Atlant Bieri

It's not just green stuff

Lush green meadows are a beautiful feature of our landscapes. But there is more to a meadow than just green colour. It is comparable to a miniature rainforest that is composed of a huge variety of different plants. The grasses allone make up a dozen species in an average meadow. And there can be many more in a nature protection zone or in a sustainably managed plot. So, the "research assigment" in this case: Draw the individual grass species and try to find out their name. by Atlant Bieri

Nature's flying machine

The maple seed is a natural wonder. It is the perfect flying wing grown on a tree. It's like saying that there is a tree that produces watches. The seed is made up of a bunch of veins. At the bottom, where the actual seed is located, the veins are closely packed together. Further up, they spread out. They do this in such a well organised manner that an aerodynamic wing is formed. At the left side, the wing is a bit thicker and heavier. At the right side it is thin and lightweight. The reason why it flies in circles is probably that the seed is at one side of the wing and not in the center. We could do a test. Cut out the seed and mount it in the middle.
