The mist filter feeders

In spring 2022, we travelled north from Los Angeles. In the hills, we came across imposing oak cloud forests:

“To my astonishment, large stretches of California's coast are forested. This means that the forest extends behind the first row of hills. This hinterland is kept moist by fog. The water-impregnated air rises from the sea up the hills and condenses into fog. The oak trees are covered with cord-like lichen. Its fine network is excellently suited to filter the water droplets from the air.”
