On a trip to Thailand I visited the northern hills bordering Myanmar:
“Southwest of Chiang Rai, the route goes up the hills to over 1300 metres above sea level. The foothills of the Himalayas. Region of ethnic minorities, Further down the slope, agriculture follows.
In many places, coffee is grown between the forest trees up to the hilltops. To do this, the stabilising bamboo is cleared with fire. The forest actually belongs to the state and is not available for agriculture. I wonder how well this is controlled and enforced. Arabica coffee is the nemesis of this landscape and these forests. ”
